In The Quiet (Andrew Bird : Souverian)

Exactly 4 weeks and 1 day ago I had a baby, my second Baby Bee Girl.

I tell you this only because I need you to know that I spend a lot of my days awake between the hours of 1a-5a, alone with a baby.

One of the (many, many, MANY) things no one tells you about having a baby is that it can be a lonely, isolating experience.  You’re alone sitting in the quiet, an overwhelming quiet.

I’ve been using that time to listen to music and find myself gravitating to quiet, soothing sounds that calm me and don’t wake a sleeping newborn.

Andrew Bird’s Souverian is one of those songs that gently fills the quiet.  A devastatingly gorgeous song by a man that single-handedly created the ‘devastatingly gorgeous song’ genre.

Just Hit Play.

Obsessed with: Trixie Whitley – Breathe You In My Dreams

I am SLAIN! This song. This video. That voice. Straight out of Brooklyn via Annie Lennox, Trixie Whitley‘s Breathe You In My Dreams (from new album Fourth Corner) is a devastating and gorgeous song, Whitley possesses a gorgeous instrument and this video is absolutely mesmerizing. Watch. Now.

Vivian Garcia : Cold Bed

A young Cuban-American influenced by Delta blues, cultivated in Chicago with a dash of Latin rhythms, all brought together and honed in Madrid – that is the lovely Vivian Garcia. Ms. Garcia’s debut album, Cold Bed, is a collection of intimate blues songs I’ve had in heavy rotation since it’s mid-December release. Ms. Garcia has the command and power of a flamenco singer with an honest and vulnerable charm that can take lines like, “If love is everything / then what am I to do / when everyday I walk these streets alone / and I come home to a cold bed too” and deliver them matter-of-factly without a trace of bitterness.  Currently in Chicago for the holidays, the CD release party is this Thursday at Barra Ñ. Below is the video for Cold Bed.

Blog Me, Mabye?

I miss your dumb faces. 2012 was kind of bullshit with a few bright spots so I’m ready to grab 2013 by the balls and have myself a good ol time. This will be the second year I’ve shied away from any kind of “Best of…” list because aside from not having the time to organize my notes, edit my drafts and search for decent YouTube and SoundCloud links, I just haven’t been feeling it. I agree with so many of the lists already out there it just feels stupid for me to chime in with my $0.02. Instead I’ll leave you with this fucking song that Baby Bee became obsessed with this year and even has a sorta-routine choreographed for it. Happy New Year, bitches!
